Description
Begin your tour at the Tasmanian Travel and Information Center. Follow the historic Sandy Bay Road and Channel Highway, passing the remains of the Gaol from where the convicts built them. See prosperous Sandy Bay with its shops, beaches, University of Tasmania Campus, and Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania. Pass Taroona High School and hear a story about a famous person you’ve probably heard of. Enjoy views of the peculiar 58m sandstone shot tower that could just about make the fairy tale Rapunzel come alive, before arriving at popular Kingston Beach. Enjoy a free hot drink from a local waterfront cafe as you sit and view the beach, Derwent Estuary, and the 1811 Iron Pot lighthouse. If you like, enjoy a short walk on the promenade or beach. Then, head through the bush (Eucalyptus forest) to the hilltop suburb of Mt Nelson. Pass a local volunteer fire station and hear one of its stories. Visit the signal station where flags and mast arms once communicated signals all the way to the Port Arthur convict site. Enjoy the historic displays and get some amazing views of Hobart, the Derwent, and the Tasman Peninsula. On your return, pass through Hobart’s oldest suburb, Historic Battery Point. Pass the 1837 St Georges Church with yet another mysterious sandstone tower plus an unexpected story. Then, pass the Shipwrights Arms Hotel, popular with the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, before passing its finish line. Next, pass the colonial-era Tasmanian Parliament, and the proposed Australian Football League stadium site for a timely drop-off only 100m from the cruise terminal. There is also the option of being dropped back at the Tasmanian Tourist Information Centre.Includes
