Depart from Strahan on Tasmania’s west coast for a guided cruise aboard a boat with a whisper-quiet electric motor. Travel through Macquarie Harbor, Hells Gates, Heritage Landing, and Sarah Island while learning about their histories through character-based interpretations featuring Captain James Kelly and Lady Jane Franklin.
Glide through the narrow entrance of Hells Gates where the harbor meets the Southern Ocean. Visit fish farms in Macquarie Harbor to discover salmon and trout farming on Tasmania’s west coast and enjoy tasting fresh local produce.
Continue along the Gordon River, surrounded by pristine wilderness. Stop at Heritage Landing to walk elevated boardwalks through temperate rainforest, observing endemic flora including sassafras, myrtle, and ancient Huon pines.
Conclude with a guided tour of the ruins of Sarah Island, a former penal settlement. Hear historical convict stories that provide insight into Tasmania’s early colonial past.
