The Cascades Female Factory is Australia’s most significant historic site linked to female convicts, located near Hobart beneath Mount Wellington. It was a self-contained institution designed to reform female convicts. Thousands of women and children were imprisoned here, many never leaving.
This World Heritage site provides a meaningful connection to the stories of female convicts and their children, reflecting both hardship and resilience. Admission includes a self-guided audio tour, access to exhibition spaces and the historic site, plus optional additional tours.
The 45-minute Convict Women's Tour introduces first-time visitors to the site's history, the women who lived there, and the convict system in Van Diemen's Land.
The 60-minute Notorious Strumpets storytelling experience explores the lives of seven notable convict women who overcame adversity, highlighting their resilience and societal challenges.
