Description

Maria Island lies an hour east of Hobart by car, plus a 30-minute ferry ride. The island offers a quiet, vehicle-free environment rich in history and wildlife. Wombats, wallabies, Cape Barren Geese, and Tasmanian Devils roam freely here.

The tour visits Darlington, a well-preserved probationary convict settlement considered the best of its kind globally. Walk the 4.5 km round trip to the Painted Cliffs, featuring ancient sandstone streaked with orange, red, and yellow patterns along one of Tasmania’s most photographed coastlines.

The Fossil Cliffs circuit is another 4.5 km loop that crosses windswept hills on the island’s west side. The cliffs contain 300-million-year-old marine fossils embedded in the rock, such as brachiopods, corals, and crinoids from when this region was a shallow inland sea. Clear days offer expansive views toward the Freycinet Peninsula.

Along the way, guests can explore rockpools and spot wildlife. The tour is guided with respect for the island’s natural environment and heritage. The group returns to Hobart around 5:00 PM.
