Description
Explore Mt Wellington up close on this guided half-day tour led by David, a University of Tasmania-trained local guide with expertise in natural sciences. The tour focuses on the mountain’s history, geology, and plant life through a scenic drive with multiple stops, avoiding any strenuous hiking.
The tour begins at 2pm at the Tasmanian Travel Information Centre (20 Davey Street). From there, enjoy a scenic drive through historic Hobart, visiting Cascade Gardens to see one of Australia's best collections of Rhododendrons and mature trees. You will also view the historic Cascade Brewery building and Mt Wellington.
Next, the tour passes the convict Female Factory and Hobart Rivulet, known for hosting platypus. Continuing, you’ll drive through eucalyptus forests and the cool climate gardens of Ferntree before arriving at The Springs, where you can purchase refreshments at the Lost Freight Cafe. At The Springs, examine the mountain’s cliffs and summit and learn about its dramatic weather and history at the site of the former Springs Hotel.
The journey continues up to the Chalet area, where you will see snow gums, flowering banksia, a waterfall, a unique dolerite hut, and expansive views of Hobart. Your guide will share knowledge of the mountain’s botany, geology, and water resources informed by local study and lifelong experience.
Above the tree line, the vehicle climbs to the summit, offering views of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area mountains. Take free time to explore the summit platforms, observe alpine vegetation and rock formations, and enjoy extensive vistas over southern Tasmania.
The tour concludes with a scenic return to the Tasmanian Travel Information Centre, arriving at 6pm, allowing time for dinner at nearby restaurants. Travel time includes commentary and scenic viewing throughout the drive.
