Maingon Bay Lookout
Tasmania
At a glance
Maingon Bay Lookout is an outdoor coastal viewpoint on Safety Cove Road near Port Arthur, within the Tasman National Park landscape of Tasmania’s Tasman Peninsula. It forms the upper part of the visit to Remarkable Cave, combining a broad viewing platform with views across Maingon Bay towards Penguin Rocks and the exposed southern coast.
The lookout is the accessible section of the site. From the car park, the upper path leads to the platform, where the scale of the headland, sandstone cliffs and open sea can be appreciated without taking the steep route to the cave. The setting is open and coastal, with changing conditions shaped by weather, tide and swell.
A lower route continues from the lookout to a purpose-built viewing platform at the entrance to Remarkable Cave. Parks Tasmania grades this section as Grade 3 and records 115 steps, with a return walk of about 15 minutes. The stairway can be wet, while sea spray and changing coastal conditions can affect the experience. The lower platform is the designated place to view the wave-cut opening, and the cave, beach and surge zone are not areas for visitors to enter.
Remarkable Cave is a passage formed as waves eroded the sandstone cliffs, with part of the cave wall later collapsing. The opening provides a changing coastal scene rather than a fixed display, as the appearance is influenced by the sea and weather. The lookout itself remains worthwhile when the lower stairs are unsuitable, making it a practical stopping point for visitors interested in coastal geology, landscape photography and the wider Tasman Peninsula.
Separate tracks from the area lead towards Maingon Blowhole, Mount Brown and Crescent Bay. These are longer walks requiring additional time, water and preparation, rather than extensions to the short cave visit. A valid parks pass is required for the national park, and current park alerts are relevant before travel from Port Arthur. Maingon Bay Lookout suits visitors seeking a straightforward coastal viewpoint, as well as those planning a more active walk around the surrounding headland.
