Hellyers Road Distillery
Tasmania
Hellyers Road Distillery in Burnie is Australia's largest distiller of single malt whisky. It also produces a vodka and Whisky Cream liqueur. Pure, quality ingredients result in a class product. Their Peated Single Malt Whisky was awarded Australia's best whisky at the 2010 awards.
The dedicated Visitor Centre offers product tastings of the Hellyers Road Single Malt range, Southern Lights Vodka and Whisky Cream range.
A guided tour or Whisky Walk, that takes 30-40 minutes, can be undertaken showing and explaining the process undertaken to produce quality whisky. If you wish, as part of the Whisky Walk you will have the opportunity to pour and wax seal your very own bottle of Hellyers Road, complete with a signed Certificate of Authenticity. There are plenty of fascinating facts to learn on the Whisky Walk. Did you know that no flavour is allowed to be added to single malt whisky, with 70% of the flavour and 100% of the colour coming from the cask the whisky is matured in? American Oak barrels are utilised that have been used once by the Jack Daniels Distillery. At the present time, whisky is aged in barrels for a minimum of eight years. The cream used in the Whisky Creme comes from the milk processor right next door, with the milk sourced from dairy cows in the region.
The Visitor Centre has a beautiful outlook over rolling hills of fertile farmland. It provides a mix of educational, dining (fully licensed restaurant) and retail therapies to interest whisky and non-whisky lovers alike. The restaurant features a delicious range of Tasmanian produce such as salmon and trout, with beef, lamb, pork, cheese, mushrooms and more sourced from producers in this part of Tasmania.
Learn about Henry Hellyer who as chief surveyor of the Van Diemen's Land Company pioneered exploration in this part of Tasmania.
