Abraham Mezze Bar
Tasmania
At a glance
Abraham Mezze Bar is a small vegetarian venue in New Town, serving Levant-inspired food in a relaxed, intimate setting. The menu is built around mezze, with light plates designed for sharing or for a casual stop between the day and dinner. The cooking draws on Lebanese and wider Al-Sham traditions while working with the seasonal availability of Tasmanian produce.
Much of the venue’s character comes from its connection to growing, preserving and making food by hand. Produce is grown in kitchen gardens and at a property in Molesworth, while breads, pickles and preserves are made in-house. That approach gives the menu a strong sense of place and connects the food with older agricultural traditions, plant knowledge and seasonal harvests.
Drinks cover several styles without making the bar feel formal. Arabic-style black coffee sits alongside herbal teas grown in the kitchen garden, seasonal non-alcoholic drinks, Tasmanian wines and a selection of international bottles chosen to work with Mediterranean flavours. The result suits a midday meal, a light snack or a pre-dinner drink rather than a long formal dining occasion.
The venue’s atmosphere extends beyond the food. Music, art, politics and chess all form part of the setting, giving the space the feel of a lived-in gathering place rather than a conventional restaurant. Its Lebanese family heritage and Tasmanian surroundings are reflected in both the cooking and the wider outlook, with food treated as a way to share culture and consider questions of land, identity and community.
Seating is limited to 20 places, divided between the indoor room and a drystone courtyard. The compact scale makes Abraham Mezze Bar a natural fit for solo diners, couples and small groups seeking vegetarian mezze, thoughtful drinks and an unhurried setting. The courtyard adds an outdoor option, while the interior offers a cosy base for coffee, small plates and conversation.
