The Maria Island Walk

Tasmania

Adventure by Land

The Maria Island Walk offers a memorable experience for everyone fortunate or wise enough to take part. You will have four days and three nights on Maria Island, enjoying pristine beauty by day, gourmet meals with the best of Tasmanian produce and wine, and comfortable nights.

Maria Island lies 15km off the Tasmania's East Coast. It has no permanent inhabitants which also means no shops or traffic. The Maria Island Walk is the winner of many, many awards with the latest being at the 2012 Tasmanian Tourism Awards in the Tour & Transport Operators category.

Two guides accompany each group, with a maximum number of 10 guests. The first two nights are spent in environmentally sensitive camps, with beds, mattresses, pillows and sleeping bags all in place. The third and final night is in the restored and heritage listed Bernacchi Lodge at Darlington. Darlington is a UNESCO world heritage listed former convict settlement, with well-preserved historical buildings. Darlington operated as a convict penal settlement and later as a convict probation station.

The knowledgeable guides relate the history of Maria Island from the aboriginal inhabitants, penal settlements, whalers, industry and farmers, to its current status as a national park, with its abundant wildlife.

Walks are easy paced, with an optional walk to the top of Mt Maria (711m).

Walks depart daily from 1st October to 1st May.
