Darlington Vineyard
Tasmania
You’ll find Darlington Vineyard on a two hectare site just a kilometre from the sheltered waters of Prosser Bay on Tasmania’s East Coast.
The vineyard takes its name from the historical settlement of Darlington on nearby Maria Island, once an enterprising vineyard experiment established in 1885, only to be abandoned a decade later.
A cool climate combined with the dry east coast conditions and the hungry soil provides Darlington Vineyard with its unique environment. With 5000 vines of four varieties, personal attention is given to each vine. Low cropping rates produce small berries and intense flavours for the Darlington Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.
The annual yield is between seven and 10 tonnes and the aim is to produce two kilograms of fruit from each plant. The rows face north east on a sloping block, this allows the cool air to drain out the bottom of the vineyard and counter the effects of frost. The vines are hand tended and picked ensuring the utmost care.
Cellar doors sales and wine tastings are available at the vineyard.
